Situated on a 142-acre site, The Friends of Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum is museum is dedicated to preserving the memory of Benjamin Banneker, the first African-American of science and mathematics, and sharing the impact of his work. Plan make a day of it when you go, so you have plenty of time to look at the interesting artifacts and enjoy a leisurely afternoon in the park.

The Benjamin Banneker museum includes a split-log colonial cabin that’s a replica of Banneker’s original home, which burned to the ground on the day of his funeral. The Banneker Gallery is a permanent exhibit that honors the life and legacy of Benjamin Banneker and the Bannaka Family. An orchard and herb and vegetable gardens demonstrates the self-sustainability of Banneker and other colonists and makes for a lovely nature walk.

When you make your way to the park, you can wander along 6 miles of trails that connect to the historic #9 Trolley Trail, which spans from Catonsville to Ellicott City. You can also tour the Trueth-Bannaky House, a carefully restored 19th-century farmhouse in the park. If you decide to pack a picnic, you and your family can enjoy a slow meal in one of the picnic areas, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum is located at 300 Oella Avenue in Catonsville. Museum hours are 10 a.m to 4 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday, and they’re closed on Sunday and Monday. The park is open from sunrise to sunset all year long. Admission is free, but they request a $3 donation, if possible.

If you’re interested in sports, drive down to the Hubert V. Simmons Museum of Negro Leagues Baseball . This unique educational resource in the Baltimore community aims to remember, educate, and preserve the artifacts and legacy of African American baseball players and show their impact on the cultural history of our nation.

As you learn about notable players like Hubert “Bert” Simmons, Larry Doby, and Leon Day, you’ll also learn about big issues like segregation and equality with an added emphasis on good sportsmanship and content of character . You can look at memorabilia like the original uniforms worn by players in the Black Sox and an encased game ball from the Black Yankees.

This museum is inside the Owings Mills branch of the Baltimore County Public Library at 10302 Grand Central Avenue in Owings Mills. They’re open the same hours as the library: from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. There’s no charge for admissions.

The Port Discovery Children’s Museum will get your kids excited about learning and awaken their curiosity. There are three floors of hands-on interactive activities that encourage kids to be imaginative, inventive, inquisitive, and explorative through play. The fun atmosphere encourages children of all ages to learn and play together while solving real-world problems.

In the BGE Studio Workshop, children can create their own artistic masterpieces while creatively exploring visual arts of all kinds. Your kids can create their own abstract masterpiece out of geometric shapes on the magnetic Tangram Wall, or they can collaborate with others to make something truly unique.

You can find the Port Discovery Children’s Museum at 35 Market Place in Baltimore. They’re open from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and closed on Monday and Tuesday. General admission tickets must be purchased online , and tickets are nonrefundable. Admission for adults and children is $19.95, children under the age of 1 get in for free, and there’s a $1 discount for members of the military and their children.

Bring your aspiring scientists and everyone looking to the Maryland Science Center . Whether you’re curious about what’s under the ground or outer space, what’s inside your body or what’s in the great outdoors, the Science Center uses open-ended exploration to answer all of your questions. They also have an IMAX theater!

There are several exhibits to check out. Some of our favorite are:

• Dinosaur Mysteries lets your kids can become a paleontologist and explore dig pits and excavation sites.
• Cells: The Universe Inside Us includes a giant maze for kids to explore how proteins are made.
• Newton’s Alley features hands-on interactive discovery areas to learn about physics and gravity.

Your tykes can also learn through play in the Kid’s Room. Whether they’re splashing in the water as they build waterways and dams and pretending to be boat captains, or they prefer to stay dry and build towers and train stations out of Legos, there’s no end to kids’ exploration in this dynamic room.

The Maryland Science Center is located at 601 Light Street in Baltimore. They’re open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday through Sunday and are closed on Monday and Tuesday. General admission for adults is $25.95, senior citizens are 24.95, kids are $19.95, and museum members or those with an ASTC Passport get in for free. You can add an IMAX movie for just $2 more.
